Stratford student pursues degree

Jennifer Therien received her associate’s degree in dental hygiene magna cum laude from the University of Bridgeport in May of 2013. She passed her boards and is a licensed dental hygienist.

She is in her first semester senior year at the University of Bridgeport pursuing a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene. She also was named to the president’s list honors, all but her first semester of freshman year.

Notre Dame Girls High School, Class of 1969, formerly of Bridgeport, is planning its 45th reunion to be held on Sept. 27, 2014 at the Fairchild Wheeler Room at Vazzy’s at the Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course in Fairfield. Tickets are $50 per person.

Brittany A. Lawson has been accepted at Gannon University, Erie, Pa., and will begin classes in the fall 2014 semester as a biology major.

Daughter of Hakima Bey-Coon, she is a graduate of Bunnell High School. She was a member of varsity cheerleading and CT Spirit All-stars. She was on the All-Academic Cheer Team 2012 and the CT All-state Cheerleading Team 2011.

Stratford native Catherine Grasso was honored at the 2014 Student Life Awards at Stonehill College recently. Grasso, a member of the class of 2014, received the 2013-2014 SGA Executive Board Recognition Award. Grasso was the executive secretary of the Student Government Association.

Resident is fellowship recipient at Eastern Connecticut State University

Eric Cerino, a 2014 graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University, has been named a recipient of a Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) fellowship from the National Science Foundation (NSF). A $30,000 stipend will cover Cerino’s tuition and support direct research costs during the first 12 months of his Ph.D. program at Oregon State University’s (OSU) LIFE (Linking Individuals, Families and Environments) in an Aging Society program. Cerino’s major is Psychology.

Cerino also recently presented his research project, “Investigating Subjective Age, Level of Activity and Depressive Symptoms in Older Adults,” at the 18th annual Posters on the Hill event in Washington, D.C. The goal of Cerino’s research was to see if depression levels among senior citizens were impacted by how young a person feels and how active he or she is in society. Cerino also created one of 60 posters that were selected from about 600 submissions for the April 2014 Posters on the Hill event.

Cerino also was named as one of two Eastern student recipients of a Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award for the 2013-14 academic year.

Morris completes Navy basic training

Navy Seaman David A. Morris, son of James A. Morris of Stratford and Leontine K. Morris of Providence, R.I., was recently promoted to his current rank and graduated with honors from U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Morris received the early promotion for outstanding performance during all phases of the training cycle. Training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations”. This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment.

Its distinctly “Navy” flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor.

Stratford students awarded scholarships from BIC

Two Stratford residents are recipients of BIC scholarships. The scholarships are awarded annually to children of BIC employees and are based on the students’ scholastic achievements and community service. This year, BIC awarded a total of $115,000 in scholarships to 64 winners, including these two Stratford residents:

Brian Sharnick, who is studying Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement at the University of New Haven, received a $5,000 scholarship. He is the son of Shawn Sharnick.

Nicholas Cavoto, who is studying Chemistry at Quinnipiac University, received a $3,000 scholarship. He is the son of Donald Cavoto.

BIC Corporation began its scholarship program in 1971 to support future leaders and to help employees’ children defray the cost of college and graduate school. Over the past 43 years, BIC has awarded more than $2,220,000 in merit scholarships.

Joseph Adams was selected to participate in the University of New Haven’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program. Adams, a senior studying communications says his project involves, “creating a video documentary of the natural history of San Salvador Island in the Bahamas for education presentations and habitat protection advocacy.”
